11-3-23 Grotte to Aragona

I spent yesterday afternoon and evening in Recalmuto.  I basically had an old building with two rooms and a kitchen to myself. The town is super quiet.

This morning Guido, the owner picked me up to take me to Grotte, only 5 Km up the trail, but still worth it. I wanted to see old town, but he was very pragmatic and just want to get me to the road to Aragona.  I had to walk back into town to catch a couple shots.

I met a group of six Italians doing the trail, just starting out with coffee.  We met up several times along the trail that morning but they weren’t people I wanted to walk with.

The Italians.

This big rock served as an ancient lookout on the road .

I passed the Italians at the big lookout rock and paused to soak up the scenery.

The Italians passed, went up the road, and I followed them.  I assumed that was the way.

When I next looked at my GPX track, I was way off course.  I had to walk back to where I had stopped and go up the hill on a dirt track.  It took me up to the top where there were several wind turbines.  The wind was blowing, the skies were dark and then I remembered the thunderstorm warning on my weather app. I headed cross country down to the trail below and soon was into the cute little town of Comitini.

On my way down to that little village, I again ran into the Italians .  They had taken an alternate route to see a sulfur mine.
Coming into Comitini.

The owner of the place in Aragona asked me to call him at this town. I thought it was to let him know I was close. But I think he thought I wanted a ride from there.

When I was almost to Aragona he pulled up on his car and said “ hello Mr. Tim”. He offered a ride but I told him I wanted to finish the walk.

Upon checking in, I gave him my ID and he said he had the same exact birthday as me.  ( turns out it wasn’t true, but could you imagine how cool that would be)

He told me there was a take out pasta place a few doors down.  I ran, because stores close without notice here. There was no pasta but I got some meaty bread like things for €3.50.  Then I ran to the little food place to get eggs, tomatoes and fruit.  That was enough food for dinner, breakfast and lunch the next day. I’m not finding restaurants out here like I did in Prizzi, but I am finding food.
