Wed. 10-25-2023 Monreale
What a nice chill yet amazing day in Monreale. What has been adding to my experience, in the background, while I’m experiencing gritty Napoli streets, or the brightness of Palermo or the casual nature of Monreale, is that I have been reading “The Godfather “ by Mario Puzo. It is an amazing book, just finished it, on the Eve of my hiking adventure.
I spent two nights here in Monreale, so I could see the much acclaimed Cathedral. I’m glad I did.
It was first constructed starting in 1140 or some way back time machine century, and evolved to its present form in the 17th century, but don’t quote me on any of that. It glows, it shows several bible stories on the elaborate mosaics on all surfaces of the main chamber.
Jesus died and they cut off his head apparently. Huh? The walk around the top of the structure was amazing.
I was far ahead of the big tour groups and I took my time to really appreciate where I was.
After the cathedral visit I got some sliced cheese, and salami and I did it in Italian damn it. I know how to say “slice” and I’m damn proud of it. I also picked up “tre pane piccoli”. Three small breads at the bakery. I have enough stuff for two lunches of sandwiches and dried fruit and almonds for snacks, because I really don’t know what food is out there.
Here is the hill I have to traverse tomorrow:
I’m getting a ride from Davide, my gracious host, to the thin town below the “hill” which is Alofonte. It shaves off 5 miles and makes an impossible hike somewhat doable. There you have it. Please comment if you can and tell me how to respond, because Google is not perfect. (Sorry Matty).
